T’is the season for holiday shopping, but some holiday shopping tips could just as easily be used for estate planning.

1.         Be careful shopping online….

Just like a one-size-fits-all sweater you purchase online probably won’t offer the best fit, neither will an online ‘one-size-fits-all’ estate planning or will kit.  When it comes to estate planning, as well as creating a will or trust, a custom fit is a must-have to meet your family’s needs and goals.

2.         Make a list and check it twice…

Take time to review your estate planning documents.  Significant life changes may mean documents in your estate plan should be updated.  Events such as the birth of a child, divorce or the death of a relative should trigger an estate plan review.  Even without significant life changes, plans should be reviewed every few years.

3.         Don’t put off until tomorrow…

Holiday shopping shouldn’t be put off until the last minute, and neither should estate planning.  Estate planning is an important process and involves the future of your loved ones, so don’t wait until a health scare or another event pushes you into creating a will.

Working with an estate planning attorney ensures that your estate plan meets the needs and goals of your family.  It’s a holiday gift that will be treasured.
